Earthwork Engineering
The practice of excavating soil and rock and placing it to shape the earth has been around since the Neolithic age. Earthworks can vary in height from a few centimetres up to 300m and can stretch for many tens of kilometres.
Properly engineered earthworks are essential to achieving their design objectives. Considering that earth (a mixture of soil and rock) is highly variable, understanding of the engineering properties through appropriate investigation and laboratory testing is of critical importance to the design process. A well-designed construction testing program is also necessary to ensure that the fill is placed and compacted in a manner that the required engineering properties are achieved.
We have been involved with hundreds of earthworks projects, through all stages from investigation of borrow materials, preparing appropriate earthworks designs, and conducting earthworks compliance testing. Our Senior Principal has been directly involved as a NATA signatory for earthworks testing and his experience includes establishing on-site testing laboratories for major dam construction works. We have also carried out many smaller-scale earthworks projects involving testing of  backfilling of service trenches, swimming pools, cut-to-fill earthworks for residential development etc.
